About Provider

About Shakira

I am a board-certified Psychiatric Mental Health Nurse Practitioner (PMHNP) with a passion for helping individuals navigate life's challenges and achieve lasting emotional wellness. I have been working in the mental health field since 2013, beginning my career supporting individuals with disabilities and special needs before expanding my experience to include critical care, outpatient/inpatient psychiatry, and veterans' mental health. I work with adolescents and adults experiencing anxiety, depression, mood disorders, trauma, ADHD and other mental health concerns.

My treatment approach integrates conservative medication management and therapeutic support. Together, we will create a treatment plan tailored to symptom reduction and improved functioning. My goal is to align you with the most effective treatment plan that promotes meaningful and lasting change that supports your everyday lifestyle.

Taking the first step toward better mental health takes courage. You deserve to feel heard, supported, and empowered. I provide a safe, judgment-free space where you can openly share your experiences. In your own time, I invite you and will be honored to partner with you as you work towards becoming the healthiest version of yourself.

Get to know Shakira

Why did you decide to become a counselor or psychiatric provider?

I decided to become a psychiatric mental health nurse practitioner because I've always been drawn to helping people through some of the most difficult moments in their lives. I also pride myself on breaking the stigma surrounding mental health. For me being a PMHMP is more than a career it's an opportunity to help people rediscover hope, healing, and remind them that seeking help is a strength.

What types of clients do you work best with?

I work best with adolescents and adults who are struggling with anxiety, depression, everyday life stressors, whether it be physical health or psychosocial, mood disorders, PTSD and personality disorders. I enjoy working with individuals that are interesting in gaining insight and is motivated to explore ways to better manage their symptoms.

What's one thing you wish all clients knew about therapy, mental health, or the healing process?

I wish every client knew that healing isn't about being fixed but it's about making progress one step at a time. Mental health challenges are not a sign of weakness and asking for help is one of the strongest things that you can do. Some days will feel easier than others, but every small step forward is progress.

What can clients expect in their first session with you and in the early stages of therapy?

Your first session, my priority would be getting to know younot just your symptoms. We will also discuss what brought you in for treatment, your medical history, your mental health history and what goals you would like to achieve. If medications are warranted, we would discuss appropriate medication options including potential benefits, risk and side effects. If warranted, we will also discuss the benefits of incorporating psychotherapy.

What personal experiences or values inform your practice as a therapist/provider?

Personal experiences that inform my practice as a provider started with me supporting other individuals struggling with mental health before transitioning into a psychiatry. These experiences have made me passionate about reducing the stigma surrounding mental health, by ensuring every patient feels valued, safe and empowered.

How do you tailor therapy to meet each client’s unique needs?

My approach is collaborative with each client. Every client comes with their own experiences, challenges, strengths and goals. I take the time to listen to understand what is of priority for each client is. I consider not only your symptoms, but your lifestyle, support system and personal preferences.
