Get to know Melissa
Why did you decide to become a psychiatric provider?
I have always felt that I am able to help others navigate emotions and feelings. I know what it is like to be depressed, have anxiety, and have family members with mental illness and substance abuse issues.
What types of clients do you work with best?
The client that is willing to try and put forth the effort.
What type of clients are you most excited to work with?
I am most excited to work with clients that I can relate to; anxiety, depression are areas that can be interesting and see progress in management.
What’s one thing you wish all clients knew?
I wish all clients knew they have a new opportunity each day- to not to sweat the small stuff- even though sometimes the small stuff feels so big!
Why did you choose to practice at Thriveworks?
Thriveworks will provide me an opportunity to work with clients in different areas of the state and perhaps even the country, that are seeking help in our underserved mental health system. It will be nice to see the product of the work that the clients complete. Also the fact that this is a career that works nicely with my current job as a high school teacher.
What inspires you?
I am inspired when others learn new things, or accomplish something that they did not feel that they could; perhaps that is why I love working as a mental health professional as well as a school teacher.
What can clients expect in their first session with you?
You may not get a prescription on your first visit, most likely that will not happen. You may be asked to have lab work done, as well as answer other questions. I will want to know about you and your relationships, eating habits, and probably what will make tomorrow a better day than today.
What should clients know about you before scheduling a first counseling session?
I know your time is precious, just like mine. I will give you the best of me during our session. I am working from home, in a small town. I live with my husband of almost 27 years. I am practical and down to earth. I can be straight forward, and honest. You may need to be prepared for a review of what you share with me to make sure that I am understanding your requests. It may be different from other counselors, as I have worked in the Psych Emergency Department for many years, therefore I am open and honest.
What do you do for fun in your time off?
For fun, I love time at the lake with the family and seeing my grandkids. We have family game night at least once a month. I attend church regularly to maintain my mental health and refuel the soul. Other activities: Spending time with friends, watching students play sports, watching racing, going hunting, and driving the cart around the family property of 80 acres, I am starting a garden this year. Finally, I enjoy attending Shriner's events with my spouse.
What’s one thing about you that defines you (non-professional)?
I am easy to talk, and I have a positive outlook- "this too shall pass" is my motto.
Does Melissa prescribe medications effective for the treatment of ADHD?
