My name is Kellie Morton, and I am a master's level, dual-certified family and psychiatric mental health nurse practitioner. I am certified to see clients from birth to end of life, but I generally work with late adolescents, adults, and older adults. I evaluate and treat a range of behavioral health diagnoses, including ADHD, anxiety, depression, mood disorders, and PTSD. With each client I strive to develop a trauma-informed, therapeutic alliance that factors in the life/developmental challenges unique to their age group, while developing skills and utilizing the lowest effective medication regimen to manage symptoms.
I favor a patient-centered, solution-focused approach to care. I believe each client has the knowledge, motivation, and skills required to make lasting changes that improve their quality of life and help them reach their goals. I blend techniques, borrowing from motivational interviewing, CBT, and DBT, to support clients toward improved mental health.
The decision to focus on your mental health is a big one. My goal is to provide a safe, warm, welcoming space where the client and I work as a team. My role is to hold space and support for the client as they explore who they are, develop goals/priorities, improve understanding of their individual diagnoses, and integrate changes into their life.

"I combine acute care experience and behavioral health skill to deliver person-focused, solution-focused, mind-body medicine with a focus on symptom management and skill development to empower clients and improve their quality of life."
Why did you decide to become a counselor or psychiatric provider?
I am a fairly recent transplant to New Mexico. Working in a metropolitan acute care setting the need for accessible mental health care quickly became obvious to me. I have always been interested in the field and saw an opportunity for personal growth as well as a way to support my community.
What types of clients do you work best with?
I work best with clients that are motivated and open to the possibility of change.
What's one thing you wish all clients knew about therapy, mental health, or the healing process?
There isn't a one-size fits all approach for managing mental health. Trust in the process and communicate with your provider. Understand the first treatment may not be the right/only treatment required for you.
What can clients expect in their first session with you and in the early stages of therapy?
I prefer to spend the first session getting to know the client. Their physical, developmental, social, and mental health history as well as establishing goals for care and plans for future sessions.
What personal experiences or values inform your practice as a therapist/provider?
Integrity and an interest in others drive my practice as a provider.
How do you tailor therapy to meet each client’s unique needs?
I believe in developing and supporting a therapeutic alliance by being upfront and honest throughout the working relationship, this fosters open communication. Allowing clients to feel more comfortable and confident in sharing their individual preference and challenges so that treatment can be adjusted to meet their needs.
