About McGovern

My name is John McGovern A Owusu, and I am a board-certified Psychiatric Mental Health Nurse Practitioner (PMHNP-BC). My nursing career led me to discover that mental health care allowed me to build lasting relationships with patients while helping them navigate challenging moments. Working as a registered nurse gave me firsthand experience with a variety of mental health conditions, which strengthened my passion for psychiatric nursing. I pursued advanced education to become a PMHNP, developing knowledge and clinical skills to assess, diagnose, and treat mental health disorders using evidence-based approaches.

As a PMHNP, I provide compassionate, individualized care. I believe patients deserve to be heard and involved in treatment. My approach includes psychiatric evaluation, medication management, and provider collaboration. I've worked with patients with depression, anxiety, bipolar disorder, ADHD, and trauma. I treat the whole person, not the diagnosis.

Outside work, I value time with family and friends, staying active, and reading about psychiatric advances. Maintaining balance helps me provide better care. I'm committed to lifelong learning and advocating for quality mental health care. My goal is to serve my community with integrity, compassion, and clinical excellence while reducing stigma.

Get to know McGovern

Why did you decide to become a counselor or psychiatric provider?

I became a psychiatric provider because I'm passionate about helping people navigate life's challenges with compassion, understanding, and evidencebased care. I believe everyone deserves to feel heard, supported, and empowered, and it's incredibly meaningful to partner with individuals as they work toward improved mental health and a more fulfilling life.

What types of clients do you work best with?

I am most effective when working with clients who demonstrate a strong personal commitment to their treatment and a proactive approach toward achieving their therapeutic goals.

What's one thing you wish all clients knew about therapy, mental health, or the healing process?

Understand that mental health illness is like any illness and not a stigma.

What can clients expect in their first session with you and in the early stages of therapy?

Buiilding Trust and respect for each other.

How do you tailor therapy to meet each client’s unique needs?

I tailor my approach by taking the time to understand each client's unique experiences, goals, strengths, and challenges. I recognize that no two individuals are alike, so I use evidence-based treatments while adapting my care to fit each person's needs, preferences, cultural background, and stage of life.
