I'm Afia Boahemaah, PMHNP-BC, a Psychiatric Mental Health Nurse Practitioner. I provide compassionate, evidence-based psychiatric care to children, adolescents, and adults, helping individuals navigate anxiety, depression, ADHD, trauma, PTSD, mood disorders, insomnia, OCD, and other mental health concerns. I work with people who may be feeling overwhelmed, stuck, misunderstood, or ready for a change, and I partner with each client to understand their unique experiences, identify goals, and develop a treatment approach that supports lasting emotional wellbeing and stability.

My approach is compassionate, collaborative, and individualized. I listen without judgment and understand each person's story, strengths, and goals before developing a treatment plan, including medication management and coping strategies. Having experienced trauma and loss in my own life, I understand the value of a space where clients feel heard.

You don't have to navigate difficult seasons of life alone. Whether you're facing a recent challenge or ongoing symptoms, I'm here to support you with compassion and respect. Taking the first step can feel difficult, but you deserve to feel heard and supported. I invite you to schedule an appointment and start creating a manageable, fulfilling life.

"As a woman of color who has experienced trauma and loss, I understand how deeply life experiences can shape our mental health, and I strive to provide compassionate, culturally sensitive, and judgment-free care where every person feels seen, heard, and supported. "

Why did you decide to become a counselor or psychiatric provider?

I chose to become a psychiatric provider because I believe that mental health is an essential part of overall well-being, and everyone deserves to feel heard, understood, and supported. My own experiences with trauma and loss have deepened my understanding of how profoundly life experiences can affect emotional health and have strengthened my desire to help others navigate difficult seasons of life. Through my work as a psychiatric mental health nurse practitioner, I have the opportunity to build meaningful relationships with clients, help them understand their symptoms, and work collaboratively toward greater stability, healing, and quality of life. Being able to witness someone regain hope, confidence, and a sense of control in their life is what makes this work so meaningful to me.

What types of clients do you work best with?

I work best with clients who are seeking compassionate, individualized care and are ready to take an active role in their mental health journey. I support adolescents and adults experiencing anxiety, depression, ADHD, trauma, PTSD, mood disorders, insomnia, OCD, and other mental health challenges. I especially value working with individuals who may feel overwhelmed, misunderstood, or stuck and are looking for support in understanding their symptoms, improving their coping skills, and creating meaningful, lasting change. My goal is to meet each client where they are, build a trusting therapeutic relationship, and work together toward greater stability, confidence, and overall well-being.

What's one thing you wish all clients knew about therapy, mental health, or the healing process?

I wish every client knew that healing is not a straight line, and progress does not have to happen all at once. Taking small steps, being patient with yourself, and asking for help are all meaningful parts of the process. You do not have to have everything figured out before reaching out for support.

What can clients expect in their first session with you and in the early stages of therapy?

In our first session, you can expect a welcoming, judgmentfree space where we take time to understand what brings you to care, your mental health history, current concerns, and what you hope to accomplish. We will work together to identify your goals and develop an individualized treatment plan that feels appropriate for you. In the early stages of care, I focus on building trust, understanding your unique experiences, and identifying practical strategies that can support your progress. My goal is for you to feel heard, respected, and actively involved in your care every step of the way.

What personal experiences or values inform your practice as a therapist/provider?

My personal experiences with trauma and loss have shaped the way I understand resilience, compassion, and the importance of having someone who truly listens. These experiences have strengthened my belief that every person’s story is unique and deserves to be approached with empathy, respect, and without judgment. As a psychiatric provider, I value building genuine trust, meeting clients where they are, and recognizing their strengths while supporting them through difficult times. I believe mental health care should be collaborative, individualized, and focused not only on managing symptoms but also on helping people move toward healing, hope, and a more fulfilling life.

How do you tailor therapy to meet each client’s unique needs?

I believe effective mental health care begins with understanding the individual, not just the diagnosis. I tailor my approach by taking time to learn about each client’s unique experiences, concerns, strengths, values, and goals. I consider their symptoms, history, preferences, and current circumstances when developing an individualized treatment plan. I also recognize that what works for one person may not work for another, so I remain flexible and collaborate with clients throughout the process. My goal is to provide care that feels respectful, practical, and meaningful while supporting each client at their own pace.
