I’m Summer Marshall-O’Regan, DNP, APRN, FNP-C, PMHNP-BC, a doctoral-prepared, dual board-certified Nurse Practitioner specializing in Family Primary Care and Psychiatric Mental Health. As a New Orleans native, I earned my BS from Southeastern Louisiana University, followed by my BSN, MSN, and DNP from LSU Health New Orleans, plus a post-master’s certificate from McNeese State University. I hold active licenses in Arizona, Colorado, Illinois, Louisiana, Michigan, and New York. I work with individuals experiencing anxiety, depression, mood disorders, trauma, behavioral difficulties, and life transitions.

My approach is compassionate, collaborative, and individualized, considering the connection between physical and emotional well-being. I have served as an educator with LSU Health Sciences Center, a professor at Herzing University, and a Visiting Professor at Chamberlain University. I was honored with the Great 100 Nurses Award and the DAISY Faculty Award.

Most importantly, I want my clients to know that they do not have to navigate difficult seasons of life alone. Seeking support is a meaningful step toward healing and growth. Whether you are facing persistent symptoms or a major life transition, I’m here to listen and help you identify a path forward. I invite you to schedule an appointment.

"My personal and professional experiences have shaped a compassionate, empathetic, and nonjudgmental approach to care that helps clients feel understood, respected, and empowered. By recognizing the complexities of each individual’s circumstances and meeting clients where they are, I provide personalized, goal-oriented support that strengthens resilience, builds trust, and equips clients with practical tools to achieve lasting healing, growth, and meaningful change."

Why did you decide to become a counselor or psychiatric provider?

My decision to become a counselor and psychiatric provider comes from a genuine desire to connect with others and help people feel understood, supported, and valued. I believe that everyone deserves to have someone who will listen without judgment, recognize their struggles, and help them see that change and healing are possible. I know that life can bring challenges that leave people feeling overwhelmed, misunderstood, or alone, and I want to be someone who helps them navigate those difficult moments. I am especially passionate about looking beyond a person's symptoms to understand their experiences, challenges, and individual needs. My goal is to build trusting relationships where people feel safe enough to be vulnerable, empowered to discover their strengths, and supported as they work toward meaningful change. For me, this profession is about more than treating mental health conditions; it is about recognizing the person behind the struggles and helping them realize that their circumstances do not define them. The opportunity to make someone feel heard, restore hope, and support lasting personal growth is what makes this career meaningful to me.

What types of clients do you work best with?

I work best with individuals who need a safe, supportive space where they feel genuinely heard and understood without fear of judgment. I enjoy helping people explore the underlying factors contributing to their struggles, identify patterns that may be holding them back, and develop practical strategies to improve their mental health and overall well-being. I find it especially rewarding to help clients recognize their strengths, gain a better understanding of themselves, and build confidence in their ability to navigate life's challenges. I value forming genuine therapeutic relationships that allow me to meet people where they are while encouraging growth at a pace that feels right for them. Ultimately, I want my clients to feel that they have someone in their corner who not only understands their struggles but also believes in their ability to heal, grow, and create meaningful change.

What's one thing you wish all clients knew about therapy, mental health, or the healing process?

One thing I wish every client knew is that they do not have to be perfect, have all the answers, or have everything figured out to deserve support. I believe healing begins when we feel safe enough to be honest about what we are experiencing without fear of judgment. I want people to understand that growth takes time, setbacks are part of the process, and struggling does not mean they are failing. I also believe it is important to look beyond the symptoms and understand the person, their experiences, and what may be contributing to their struggles. My hope is that every client learns to extend the same compassion to themselves that they would offer someone they love. You do not have to change who you are to become a healthier, happier version of yourself. Sometimes, healing begins with simply feeling heard, understanding yourself a little better, and realizing that you are not alone.

What can clients expect in their first session with you and in the early stages of therapy?

My approach is personcentered, collaborative, and focused on understanding the whole person, not just their symptoms. I strive to create a safe, nonjudgmental space where clients feel heard and supported. Together, we explore underlying challenges, identify patterns, and develop practical strategies to improve emotional well-being and build healthier coping skills. When appropriate, I incorporate cognitive behavioral techniques and medication management into individualized treatment plans. My goal is to help clients gain self-awareness, recognize their strengths, and make meaningful, lasting changes at a pace that feels right for them.

What personal experiences or values inform your practice as a therapist/provider?

I have always been drawn to understanding people, what shapes their experiences, and what helps them heal and grow. I believe that behind every struggle is a person with a unique story that deserves to be heard with compassion and without judgment. This belief guides my approach to mental health care. I value genuine connection, curiosity, and looking beyond the surface to better understand what someone may be experiencing. I believe medication can be an important part of treatment, but I also recognize the importance of understanding underlying challenges, developing healthy coping skills, and helping people reconnect with their strengths. My goal is to meet each person where they are, help them feel understood and supported, and empower them to make meaningful changes that improve their quality of life.

How do you tailor therapy to meet each client’s unique needs?

My approach to mental health care is rooted in genuine connection, curiosity, and a desire to understand the person behind the symptoms. I believe people are more than their diagnoses, and meaningful change begins when we take the time to understand their experiences, recognize patterns, and explore what may be contributing to their struggles. I naturally look beyond the surface, asking not only what someone is experiencing, but why—and what might help them move forward. I combine empathy with practical problemsolving, helping clients gain insight into themselves while developing realistic strategies for change. I believe medication can be an important part of treatment, but I also value the work of understanding underlying challenges, building healthier coping skills, and addressing the factors that influence overall well-being. Above all, I want clients to feel genuinely understood, not judged or defined by their struggles. My goal is to help each person recognize their strengths, reconnect with their sense of possibility, and find a path toward lasting change that feels authentic to who they are.
