About Claire
Hello! I am Claire Cross, PMHNPBC, and I’ve worked in healthcare since 2006. I graduated from the University of Louisiana Monroe in 2006 with my Bachelor of Science in Nursing. I have 15 years of nursing experience in critical care, surgery, and psychiatric nursing. I completed my Master of Science in Nursing at the University of South Alabama in 2020 and received a Psychiatric Mental Health Nurse Practitioner, Across the Lifespan Certification from the ANCC in 2021. I have 5 years of experience treating clients with depression, anxiety, PTSD, bipolar disorder, schizophrenia, substance use disorders, and personality disorders.
My general approach involves working with the patient to find a medication regimen that works for them and that they are comfortable with. I feel that when the patient is comfortable with medication/medications that there is an increased likelihood of compliance and continued improvement in their mental health.
I want my patients to feel heard. It is so difficult to ask for help and places a person in such a vulnerable position that a trusting relationship is essential for progress. Congratulations on taking the step to ask for help. You should be very proud of yourself.

"As someone who also struggles with mental health, I understand how difficult it can be to ask for help. "

Why did you decide to become a counselor or psychiatric provider?
I struggle with mental health myself. I hate to see people struggling. I want people to feel better and do well in life.
What's one thing you wish all clients knew about therapy, mental health, or the healing process?
I with that they all knew that the hardest part is making it to your first appointment. You realize that it's not so bad once you take the leap.
What can clients expect in their first session with you and in the early stages of therapy?
During the initial session clients can expect the provider to obtain background information and becoming acquainted with one another. Background information typically includes demographics, psychiatric and medical history, family history, psychosocial history, current medications and previous medication trials, a report from the patient regarding current symptoms and reason for reaching out for treatment. It is possible that lab work may be ordered if warranted. Discussing differential diagnoses and options for treatment.
What personal experiences or values inform your practice as a therapist/provider?
The more comfortable a patient is with their provider the open and honest they tend to be. The more open the patient is about their symptoms and response to treatment allows the provider to treat the patient to the best of their ability and tailor treatment specific to the patient resulting in better outcomes.
How do you tailor therapy to meet each client’s unique needs?
Everyone is different. Each individual processes information and events differently and have different ways of coping with stressful events/situations. What works well for one person may not necessarily work well for someone else. Evaluation of the patient's current coping mechanisms and ability to manage psychiatric symptoms/stressful events comes first. Once this assessment is complete it allows for the provider to assist the patient in identifying any unhealthy ways of coping or lack thereof and provides a foundation from which to build healthy coping mechanisms.
