About Marie

Hello, I'm Marie Joassaint, a dual board-certified Psychiatric Mental Health Nurse Practitioner (PMHNP-BC) and Family Nurse Practitioner (FNP-BC) with over 15 years of progressive healthcare experience, including 7 years as a PMHNP. My background in acute care informs a deeply comprehensive approach to mental wellness, recognizing the intricate connection between mind and body. I partner with children, adolescents, adults, and older adults navigating anxiety, depression, mood disorders, and trauma who are seeking integrated care addressing their complete physical and emotional landscape to achieve sustainable healing and resilience.

My method blends comprehensive psychiatric assessment with understanding your physical health. I specialize in pharmacotherapy, crisis intervention, and therapeutic communication. I guide you to participate in building personalized care plans. Expect clear explanations, shared decision-making, and genuine partnership.

I understand reaching out for support is a significant step, and I honor your courage. You're not alone on this journey; I'm here to provide a safe, empathetic space where your concerns are genuinely heard and your path to healing is thoughtfully guided. Why did you decide to become a counselor or psychiatric provider?

My decision to become a psychiatric provider stemmed from a growing conviction that integrated mental and physical health care is not just beneficial, but essential. My years in general nursing and as an FNP showed me firsthand how often mental health needs were overlooked or siloed, especially within underserved communities. I wanted to be equipped to offer comprehensive, compassionate care that truly sees and treats the whole person, addressing both their emotional and physical wellbeing as equally vital components of health. Becoming a PMHNP allows me to fulfill this commitment, providing the specialized knowledge and empathy necessary to guide individuals towards lasting wellness.

What types of clients do you work best with?

I work best with individuals across the lifespan—children, adolescents, adults, and older adults—who are actively seeking a collaborative partner in their mental wellness journey. My ideal clients are often those who recognize the intricate connection between their mind and body and are motivated to engage in a holistic approach to care. They value clear communication, shared decision-making, and are open to exploring both pharmacotherapy and lifestyle adjustments to achieve sustainable well-being. Whether they're navigating anxiety, depression, mood disorders, or significant life transitions, they are looking for a comprehensive, personalized plan that empowers them towards lasting growth and balance.

What's one thing you wish all clients knew about therapy, mental health, or the healing process?

I wish all clients knew that true mental well-being is intrinsically linked to physical health, and that healing is a holistic journey, not just about symptom suppression. Every part of you—your sleep, nutrition, physical activity, and medical history—contributes to your mental state, and addressing these connections can unlock profound, lasting recovery.

What can clients expect in their first session with you and in the early stages of therapy?

In our initial session, clients can anticipate a structured yet compassionate conversation designed to understand your unique experience. I'll listen intently to your story, delve into your symptoms, and begin to explore your hopes and challenges. We'll cover important aspects of your medical history, current medications, and lifestyle factors that often influence mental well-being. The early stages of our work are dedicated to thorough diagnostic evaluation and empowering you with insight. You can expect us to carefully review your situation, provide clear psychoeducation about your condition, and openly discuss various treatment pathways. We'll establish a shared understanding of your mental health needs and collaboratively develop an integrated plan that feels right for you, moving forward with clarity and confidence.

What personal experiences or values inform your practice as a therapist/provider?

My personal experiences have deeply ingrained in me the values of empathy, respect, and the profound importance of cultural sensitivity in all aspects of care. Having navigated various healthcare settings and diverse communities, I understand that true healing begins when individuals feel seen, heard, and understood within their unique cultural context. This informs my commitment to fostering a safe, non-judgmental space where open dialogue flourishes, and where each client is empowered to be an active partner in their treatment. I believe in meeting people exactly where they are, honoring their individual journey, and guiding them toward solutions that truly resonate with their values and lived experience.

How do you tailor therapy to meet each client’s unique needs?

Meeting each client's unique needs is at the heart of my practice. It starts by actively listening to their specific concerns, understanding their strengths, and clarifying what they genuinely hope to achieve. My initial comprehensive evaluation considers not only psychiatric symptoms but also the significant interplay with their physical health, lifestyle, and personal values. With this deep insight, I don't believe in a one-size-fits-all approach. Instead, we collaboratively explore a personalized toolbox of interventions. This might involve carefully selected pharmacotherapy, skillbuilding from cognitive and behavioral approaches, supportive counseling, or strategies to improve interpersonal relationships. I ensure you're fully informed about each recommendation, and your preferences are central to our shared decisions, creating a dynamic plan that evolves with you as you make progress and uncover new strengths.
