Why did you decide to become a counselor or psychiatric provider?
My journey into becoming a psychiatric mental health nurse practitioner started when I was in the family nurse practitioner graduate program in 2014 at the University of Phoenix. I realized healthcare management is holistic, encompassing treating the whole person and addressing mental, physical, social, & emotional well-being.
What types of clients do you work best with?
Children, adolescents, adults up to age 65.
What's one thing you wish all clients knew about therapy, mental health, or the healing process?
I wish all clients knew that psych medications can be effective, improving the quality of life, and have patience with the healing process.
What can clients expect in their first session with you and in the early stages of therapy?
At every appointment, the client will understand how we arrive at their diagnosis/diagnoses, the medication treatment options, and the treatment plan. The client will understand the potential benefits and risks of treatment, side effects, reactions, FDA warnings, and Black Box warnings for prescribed medications. The client will be able to identify potential medication side effects or reactions and seek immediate medical and/or psychiatric care for worsening or acute symptoms. The client will understand how to utilize emergency numbers as needed.
What personal experiences or values inform your practice as a therapist/provider?
My professional experience as a Trauma/ICU Nurse and a Family Nurse practitioner impacted my decision to specialize in psych/mental health.
How do you tailor therapy to meet each client’s unique needs?
Motivational Interviewing and solution-focused approach.
