What is your go-to approach for individual therapy?

Richard O Garr
Richard O Garr

Licensed Mental Health Counselor (LMHC)

My go-to approach for helping people in individual therapy is cognitive behavioral therapy. This approach not only helps clients to understand the relationship between their thoughts, feelings, and actions, but also provides clients with strategies to make the changes they want to make to overcome life’s problems and challenges. I also work with clients to develop tools and strategies such as mindfulness activities, breathing techniques, and communication skills. Lastly, I incorporate motivational interviewing into my therapy practice, as this can help clients who feel stuck take steps toward their goals and see progress.

How do you know when a client is making meaningful progress in child therapy?

Christina Locke
Christina Locke

Licensed Mental Health Counselor (LMHC)

I know a client is making meaningful progress in child therapy when they are sharing more without as much prompting. Since most children are in therapy because an adult in their lives thinks they need it, they often either don't want to be there or don't know what to talk about. Once they start talking more openly on their own, that is progress in itself. I also see progress when children use more emotion-based language correctly, or when their parents report improvements at home.

What can clients do in their personal time to supplement family therapy?

Kevin Fenton
Kevin Fenton

Licensed Mental Health Counselor (LMHC)

Clients can supplement their time in family therapy with several different options. Individual therapy can help the different members of a family process their thoughts and emotions in their own space to help improve their ability to communicate those thoughts and emotions with others. Clients can also practice the skills they learn over the course of family therapy in their daily lives. Clients can ask their clinician for homework assignments/worksheets/resources to help them build their skills outside of therapy as well.

What should someone do to prepare for starting online therapy?

Richard O Garr
Richard O Garr

Licensed Mental Health Counselor (LMHC)

To prepare for your first therapy session, you can think about how you would like yourself and your life to be different as a result of therapy. Knowing some of your goals can help to jump-start the therapy process.

What tools do you teach in couples/marriage counseling?

Some main tools I teach in couples/marriage counseling are communication and problem-solving skills. Communication skills can help clients take a step back, use an empathetic approach to communicating with their partner, and allow them to see things from a different perspective. The likelihood of each partner being open to hearing the other out is greater when they communicate effectively. Using problem-solving skills to navigate differences of opinion and difficult situations helps to define the problem, brainstorm solutions, eliminate unwanted suggestions, and select the solution to achieve the desired outcome that will benefit them the most.

I most appreciate Theronda Myers, my therapist, about my experience with Thriveworks. I have always liked the way Theronda makes connections between the strategies and tools she gives me with subjects like art, poetry, film, biology, and neurology. It seems like she has an answer or solution to anything I bring up. So it's clear that she makes an effort to understand me and my thoughts in a like big picture. During our sessions I feel heard and understood and like I am improving from Theronda's help.
