Why did you decide to become a counselor?
As long as I can remember I've always been fascinated with Psychology. Growing up I never really had someone to show me how to properly understand or express my emotions, so I never did. As I got older the issues would change, but at the same time stay the same. Finally my life came to a head and friends/family recommended I talk to someone. It was there I found the root of the issue and learned how I could help myself and found an absolute passion in learning and sharing what I've learned. Since then I have worked with countless individuals, couples, and families to experience the same joy in counseling and in life that I feel every day.
What types of clients do you work with best?
I work best with clients who are open to understanding the source of an issue, and able to identify their own thoughts and emotions associated with those behaviors.
What type of clients are you most excited to work with?
As cliché as this is, I am honestly excited to work with most of my clients, as long as you are willing to work, I am happy to help. I have a true passion for finding that "aha" moment when things really start to click and a client is able to engage in lasting change.
What's one thing you wish all clients knew?
I wish all clients could know the difference between being and behavior - that is the difference in shame and guilt. So often we get stuck in a behavioral pattern caused by an emotion, and when our response to that emotion is causing the emotion, we get stuck.
What inspires you?
I am inspired when I can see the change in a client's life, not by their individual words or a single interaction, but overall - when someone gets it, I can see it and it is so motivating for me in the work that I do.
What can clients expect in their first session with you?
In their first session with me, clients can expect to get to know me and how I operate, as well as how I can help them in achieving their goals.
What do you want to accomplish with an individual in their first session?
In an initial session with a client, I want to be able to accomplish a sense of direction on where the client is now, and where they want to be. This, combined with working to establish a relationship with the client and help them to feel safe enough to explore the roots of their issues.
What should clients know about you before scheduling a first counseling session?
The main thing I would want clients to know about me before scheduling a session with me is that there is a difference between a kind person and a nice person. I do my best to be a kind person. Kind is defined as "having, showing, or proceeding from benevolence." and Nice is defined as "pleasing; agreeable; delightful". It is my belief that a therapist should be friendly, but not to the point of enabling or fearful of discussing an issue with a client. I aim to be kind, not nice.
What do you do for fun/on your time off?
Hobbies I enjoy include: Reading Books, Painting, Working on Computers, Powerlifting, Video Games, Watching TV/Movies, Racquetball, and spending time with friends/family.
