Joseph Walsh is a Licensed Clinical Social Worker (LCSW) in Pennsylvania and New York State who has over 9 years of experience working with adults and seniors who are seeking help in managing anxiety, depression, trauma, grief and loss, life transitions, and identity issues, among other concerns. He believes that all clients have the potential to grow and to discover greater joy and confidence in their lives.

He earned his Master's degree in Social Work from CUNY-Hunter College and his approach can be described as holistic, strengths-based, and person-centered, drawing from a number of theoretical models including cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT) and solutions-focused therapy (SFT). Believing that all individuals have unique strengths and lived experiences, Joseph works to validate and support those facing mental health concerns and life challenges.

Whether you have tried therapy before, or this is your first time, Joseph looks forward to connecting, hearing your story, and tackling your goals together. He believes that seeking help is a sign of courage and one of the most important ways to practice self-care. Sessions are always free of judgment and grounded in mutual trust.

Get to know Joseph

Why did you decide to become a counselor?

I have always felt a drive to help others and the community. Seeing clients grow and move closer to their goals is incredibly rewarding.

What types of clients do you work with best?

As a therapist, I tend to work well with clients who are open and curious to the process, and ready to focus on solutions.

What type of clients are you most excited to work with?

I am excited to work with all types of clients! I believe that each client has unique strengths and abilities that can help in reaching goals.

What’s one thing you wish all clients knew?

I want all clients to know that asking for help and finding support is not a sign of weakness, but rather a sign of courage. Therapy can be one of the most important ways to practice self-care.

Why did you choose to practice at Thriveworks?

I chose to practice at Thriveworks because of its person-centered approach and commitment to providing flexibility to clients.

What inspires you?

I am most inspired by the resiliency and strengths of our clients.

What can clients expect in their first session with you?

New clients can expect to be met with kindness, warmth, and a genuine interest in your personal growth.

What do you want to accomplish with an individual in their first session?

I look at the first session as an opportunity to get to know each other, and have an open discussion about goals and best hopes for the future. This becomes the foundation of our work together.

What do you do for fun/on your time off?

Outside of work, I enjoy spending time with family and friends, traveling, and live music. Having recently moved to Philadelphia -- after many years in New York -- I have also been enjoying exploring the city.

What’s one thing about you that defines you (non-professional)?

Some things that define me are my love of adventure, and approaching new challenges with a spirit of optimism.
