Get to know Scot

Why did you decide to become a counselor or psychiatric provider?

I have often been told that I am a good listener, and many have valued the input they have received. I felt called to the field for a number of years and recently decided to pursue counseling as a 2nd career.

What types of clients do you work with best?

During my internship I worked with a variety of clients and have found them all rewarding. I would prefer working with adults, but am open to all.

What type of clients are you most excited to work with?

The client who is seeking direction, answers, and new perspective and willing to go the distance to make a difference in their life.

What inspires you?

The things that inspire me are my family, my faith, the relationships with friends from various walks of life and their personal trials and triumphs.

What can clients expect in their first session with you?

The first session should be all about the client, listening, empathizing and validating them as an individual.

What do you want to accomplish with an individual in their first session?

The one thing that I want to accomplish is to establish a trust relationship so that they feel comfortable going forward.

What do you do for fun/on your time off?

I enjoy time with my family and time outdoors.

What's one thing about you that defines you (non-professional)?

If you talk to my close relationships they would tell you that honesty and integrity are qualities that would define me.

Can you tell us about a success you had with a client?

My greatest success with a client was with a client I felt I never should have had. She had significant challenges and I felt I was ill equipped to work with her. In the end I saw her progress significantly. This helped to validate my decision to go into counseling.
