Short Pump Psychiatry – Therapists and Counselors in Short Pump, VA
What is a Psychiatrist?
Psychiatrists are medicals doctors that are trained to diagnose and treat emotional and behavioral health conditions primarily through the prescribing of medications. Contrary to popular belief, psychiatrists don’t treat only people who are called “crazy” or “insane.”. Although it is commonly believed that this type of professional deals with only the most serious issues and disorders, they are also helpful for more common problems, such as depression, attention deficit hyperactive or or anxiety disorders.
Do I Need a Psychiatrist or a Therapist?
Unlike most mental health counselors and therapists, psychiatrists have the ability to prescribe medication, which is helpful in many situations. While talk therapy and other cognitive behavioral interventions are useful for many, some problems and disorders simply require medication. A Thriveworks Henrico psychiatrist or psychiatric nurse practitioner can evaluate symptoms and determine if medication alone or in combination with other forms of counseling is appropriate. A psychiatrist or psychiatric nurse practitioner can then prescribe, monitor, and adjust medications as needed. This can be a very helpful piece of your treatment plan. Many studies have shown that the combination of therapy and medication is better than either treatment alone which is why Thriveworks Henrico offers both psychiatry and counseling in one convenient location.
What Conditions Do Psychiatrists Treat?
There are many areas in which a psychiatrist can be helpful. These include:
- Panic disorder
- Bipolar disorder
- Generalized Anxiety
- Eating disorders
- Personality disorders
- Biological symptoms associated with Autism and other developmental disorders
