I’ve been wanting to try therapy for a long time now. I think that I might be depressed and maybe a little anxious too. And I really believe that therapy could help, but I’m having trouble taking that leap. I guess I’m embarrassed about friends and family finding out, and even a little embarrassed about opening up about these problems to a therapist. What should I do? How can I push past these reservations and finally get the help that I need.

Seeking a counselor is very courageous. If you think about it – it is a neutral party who is objective and can see things that sometimes we cannot see in ourselves yet. A sounding board that is safe without an agenda. I also thought why aren’t my friends and co workers feeling anxious or depressed…you never know…the could feel just like you. Just make the call…it really helped me. Best wishes.
Many of us feel alone and isolated when we experience anxiety and depression. We often say to ourselves, “I feel like I’m the only person in the world going through this” or may may think, “How come all of my friends seem happy”. This may be a source of shame for use.
The truth may be that our friends are suffering from similar feelings as well. We tend not to share our depression or anxiety with others. If may actually be true that many of the people we know receive therapy or counseling but because these meetings are kept strictly confidential, others do not know about them.
So when considering calling a counseling remember hundreds of people are seeking similar types of help everyday. And these people hold a wide range of positions from a variety of professions. They may even be our neighbors and friends. Therefore, you are not alone in your need for help and will not be alone in seeking help as well.
