Panic attacks affect people of any age and socioeconomic status. They vary in intensity and frequency. Perhaps you have recently experienced your first panic attack and are looking for help. Maybe your child has recently had their first panic attack. It can be difficult to know where to turn for help, whether for yourself or for a loved one. We know that you may be feeling fearful about having another attack, and unsure of how to avoid this in the future. Thriveworks Birmingham counselors can help you understand your anxiety and work towards preventing attacks in the future.

Panic attacks come on suddenly, and usually without warning. The symptoms differ from person to person, but can include:

  • Excessive sweating
  • Rapid heart rate
  • Headache
  • Nauseau
  • Feeling dizzy or faint
  • Shortness of breath
  • Chest pain
  • Trembling or shaking
  • Feeling of choking

A panic attack usually reaches full intensity within 10 minutes and normally last about 20-30 minutes. The triggers for an attack vary greatly from person to person as well. Panic attacks are so intense that many people who are experiencing their first attack fear that they are dying or having a heart attack. It is common to end up in an emergency room as a result of a panic attack.
