Starting Psychotherapy

What is Psychotherapy?

Psychotherapy is a mental health service directed at treating assorted mental health conditions and disorders. The goal of this treatment is to improve a client's daily functioning, ability to manage symptoms, and overall life satisfaction.

How does Psychotherapy work?

Psychotherapy works by employing a variety of therapeutic approaches, depending on a client's symptoms and concerns, in an effort to adjust perspectives, change behaviors, mitigate mental health symptoms, and address any other goals established by client and therapist. Making these adjustments will usually involve talking about one's past experiences, emotional introspection, making connections between emotions and behaviors, and many other practices.

Is Psychotherapy conducted in person or online?

Psychotherapy at Thriveworks in Roanoke, VA is conducted both in person and virtually via online counseling. We encourage you to choose the option that works best for you.

How long does Psychotherapy last?

Thriveworks Roanoke psychotherapy is highly individualized, and its duration will be dependent on the goals, condition, symptoms, and overall needs of the client. Some may only require a month or two of treatment before deciding that their therapy journey is complete, while others might spend years receiving treatment.

Need more help deciding?

The term “psychotherapy” can be an intimidating one, but don’t let it put you off – psychotherapy is simply another way to say counseling. Mental healthcare and counseling in Roanoke has often been met previously with trepidation; but more and more, people are beginning to embrace the powerful changes and improvements that can be realized in their lives by participating in Roanoke counseling and psychotherapy. The changes and improvements to your mental wellbeing you can realize by receiving professional counseling can be tremendous, and certainly can be life changing! Each of us look to others for advice at one time or another, most often we find ourselves turning toward friends and family to get the help we need in times of struggle. The main problem in this is that our friends and family, although they have our best intentions in mind, are almost always unqualified to provide sound guidance to us. In effect, we find ourselves asking friends and family for psychotherapy, but turn out usually receiving something much less substantial. At Thriveworks Roanoke Counseling, we believe that seeking out advice is an incredibly wise decision. We also believe, and we think that you’ll agree, that the many benefits of receiving advice are compounded when that advice comes from a qualified, professional source, like a Roanoke counselor or Roanoke psychotherapist.

I had the pleasure of working with Chris in a professional capacity for 6 years, during which time he provided individual counseling for a number of children that I referred to him. Chris always demonstrated a sincere empathetic sensibility in his relationship with his clientele. He is keenly adept at providing the skills and guidance that allows others to pursue a self-actualizing understanding and awareness of themselves. He is a superb counselor.
