Starting Therapy for women

What is Therapy for women?

Therapy for women uses traditional psychotherapeutic techniques implemented through a feminist lens to help women deal with the emotional and mental ramifications of being a woman in today's society. Thriveworks Cave Spring therapists will target issues like toxic masculinity, gender roles, misogyny, and other problems that women face daily and their impact on their mental health.

How does Therapy for women work?

Therapy for women works much like traditional therapy, but will also integrate person-centered and humanistic therapy approaches at the forefront of treatment. Thriveworks Cave Spring therapists who specialize in treating women acknowledge the unique experience of each individual while treating a wide variety of concerns with empathy, compassion, and respect.

Is Therapy for women conducted in person or online?

Therapy for women at Thriveworks is conducted both in person and online by video. We encourage you to choose the option that works best for you.

How long does Therapy for women last?

Therapy for women will often last until the client feels that their therapeutic goals have been met, whether it continues for a few months or over the course of years. However, treatment should last at least five months, as that is the average amount of time therapy takes to have a lasting impact.

Need more help deciding?

Many of life’s experiences are specific to women, and while some can be immensely rewarding, others can be incredibly difficult. Processing and coping with these challenges yourself is often possible, but usually are very difficult. Plus, a whole half of the population can’t relate or understand many of the experiences and challenges that are unique to women…even though they may try! Recent studies show that 1 out of 8 women will experience depression during their lifetime, but depression is only one issue among many that may challenge a woman during her lifetime. The following list is just a brief glimpse of the issues a woman may find herself facing at some point in her life:

  • Depression
  • Anxiety
  • Low Self Esteem
  • Infertility
  • Post-Partum Depression
  • Menopause
  • “Empty Nest” issues
  • Domestic Violence or Abuse
  • PTSD related to Past Abuse or Sexual Assault
  • Eating Disorders

Most of these issues are very personal, and can also be very painful and frightening. Frequently, they bring with them a deep sense of shame and the feeling that nobody else understands. You may find yourself struggling with the decision to bring them to light, especially if that means seeking professional help from a licensed Roanoke counselor. Well-meaning family and friends may try to help, but they probably misunderstand and say things like, “You just have to get over it and move on.” During these times, it is absolutely vital to have someone to listen, validate your concerns, and support you – someone who understands what you’re facing. At Thriveworks Roanoke Counseling for Women’s Issues, we have a highly skilled and passionate team of professionals who are here to help you!

You’re not alone.

I had the pleasure of working with Chris in a professional capacity for 6 years, during which time he provided individual counseling for a number of children that I referred to him. Chris always demonstrated a sincere empathetic sensibility in his relationship with his clientele. He is keenly adept at providing the skills and guidance that allows others to pursue a self-actualizing understanding and awareness of themselves. He is a superb counselor.
