Starting Marriage counseling

What is Marriage counseling?

Marriage counseling, also known as couples therapy and relationship counseling, helps couples work through their specific relationship issues. Thriveworks marriage counseling in Framingham, MA is led by licensed professionals — often licensed marriage and family therapists (LMFTs) — who are experts in their field and best-equipped to help couples. Some examples of common focuses within Marriage counseling include:

  • Jealousy
  • Trust issues
  • Infidelity
  • Opposing values
  • Different visions for the future
  • Disagreements in parenting
  • Lack of trust
  • Financial distress
  • Sex issues

How does Marriage counseling work?

Marriage counseling works by helping couples identify and better navigate their unique challenges. Following an initial assessment of the couple in terms of strengths and needs, the therapist would then discuss their therapeutic goals and any possible approaches or ways of working together as therapist and couple.
Couples attend sessions together, whether they meet in person or by video. In addition to regular marriage counseling sessions, each partner may also be asked to attend a few individual sessions to supplement their progress. This will allow their counselor to get to know each individual better, assess each of their personal needs, and develop the very best treatment plan moving forward.

Is Marriage counseling conducted in person or online?

Marriage counseling at Thriveworks is conducted both in person and online by video. We encourage you to choose the option that works best for you and your partner.

How long does Marriage counseling last?

On average, couples attend marriage counseling for 12 weeks. However, marriage counseling may last longer or shorter, dependent on the couples' needs, the challenges they'd like to work through, and the pace of their progress. Marriage counselors and therapists at Thriveworks in Framingham, MA work with their clients to create goals, decide on ideal timelines, and establish treatment plans.

What they often don’t anticipate, though, are the challenges they might come across in marriage. We forget that relationships take hard work, even when we make this lifelong commitment.

“Happy marriages begin when we marry the ones we love and they blossom when we love the ones we marry.” –Tom Mullen

Does My Marriage Need Marriage Therapy?

Sometimes, we put our relationships on the backburner: we focus on the demands of our everyday life and then realize later that something has gone awry in our marriage. We didn’t give it the time or attention that it needed, and as a result, we struggle to get it back on track. Fortunately, there are marriage therapists who can help you to address the problems that arise in your marriage, including:

  • Ineffective communication
  • Jealousy or trust issues
  • Lack of intimacy
  • Parenting woes
  • Infidelity
  • Personal goals

“Oftentimes therapy is thought to be a last resort. Marriage counseling should be considered much sooner, and when there are gridlocked perpetual problems causing distress,” explains Amy Fini, a Licensed Mental Health Counselor at the Framingham office. So, if you are experiencing any of the problems listed above or another problem that is not on this list, consider reaching out for help. Our marriage counselors are here for you.

How Does Marriage Therapy at Thriveworks in Framingham Work?

The marriage therapists at Thriveworks Counseling in Framingham design treatment on an individual basis. In other words, they will first get to know you and your spouse, and then they will come up with a customized plan for therapy. They will want to know your needs as well as your goals for marriage therapy. That being said, regardless of the specifics, “participants should expect to feel safe to explore their feelings, and be treated equally with evidence-based interventions to break through gridlock and apply change,” says Fini.

Our marriage counseling often involves building effective communication skills and better understanding proper conflict resolution techniques. Why? Because these are both important to maintaining happy, healthy relationships. Not only will the lessons you learn enable you to work through your current issues but they will prepare you for future problems too. In fact, there is a specific approach to couples therapy, which is focused on helping couples improve their conflict resolution skills and more. This is called the Gottman Method. A few main goals of the Gottman Method include:

  1. Better understand each other’s needs
  2. Grow your admiration and affection for each other
  3. Work to improve problem-solving skills
  4. Better manage current and future conflicts.

We are proud to offer Gottman Method Couples Therapy. In fact, we have a couple of counselors on staff who have completed Level 1 Training of the Gottman Method, and they’d be happy to use this training to help your relationship.
