Starting Emotionally focused therapy (EFT)

What is emotionally focused therapy (EFT)?

Emotionally focused therapy (EFT) is a counseling approach that is rooted in the belief that emotions play a pivotal role in shaping one’s identity and guiding daily choices. EFT posits that lacking emotional awareness can lead to adverse consequences, that avoiding or suppressing emotions can result in negative life outcomes, and that avoiding emotional responses may impair one’s ability to process emotions in the future. In emotionally-focused-therapy, trained Thriveworks Beverly Hills therapists can implement emotionally focused therapy techniques to improve emotional awareness and understanding while equipping you with coping strategies to effectively confront and manage your emotions.

What does EFT do?

Emotionally focused therapy (EFT) draws from attachment theory and emphasizes the role of emotions in relationships. EFT identifies negative interaction patterns, promoting open communication, empathy, and emotional safety. Thriveworks emotionally focused counseling in Beverly Hills, MI is comprised of three stages: de-escalation, restructuring, and consolidation. Emotionally focused therapy techniques effectively address issues in couples like communication problems, infidelity, and emotional disconnection, and have been adapted for individual and family therapy.

What is EFT good for?

Emotionally focused therapy is mainly used to treat couples by addressing conflict, improving communication, and working to solve other concerns. However, emotionally focused therapy techniques can also be effective in treating families and depression, anxiety, and other mental health concerns in individuals

What is the success rate of EFT?

Emotionally focused therapy can be remarkably successful. A research article by Stephanie Weibe and Susan Johnson titled A Review of the Research in Emotionally Focused Therapy for Couples (2016) shows that EFT has a 70%-73% success rate, and 90% of couples cited overall improvement in their relationship after the use of emotionally focused therapy techniques. It is one of the most effective couples therapy techniques.

What are the three stages of treatment in EFT?

The three stages of emotionally focused therapy are de-escalation, restructuring bonds, and consolidation. These three stages work together to help individuals break out of negative patterns of emotional disconnection, develop a new sense of emotional knowledge and security, and integrate new patterns of problem-solving and trusting emotional cues.

Can you use EFT in individual therapy?

Yes, emotionally focused therapy and emotionally focused therapy techniques can be used in individual therapy. Rather than working to improve an individual’s relationship with their significant other, emotionally focused individual therapy (EFIT) is used to help people develop a more secure sense of self, improve emotional regulation skills, and foster healthier relationships.

Is EFT conducted in person or online?

If you’re wondering, \”Is there emotionally focused therapy near me?\”, the answer is yes — it can be wherever you are. Emotionally focused therapy (EFT) at Thriveworks is conducted both in person and online via video conferencing. We encourage you to choose the option that works best for you.

How long does EFT last?

Emotionally focused therapy (EFT) is typically structured as a short- to medium-term therapy, with emotionally focused therapy techniques being implemented over a series of sessions lasting from a few months to several months. The specific number and length of EFT sessions are decided together by the client and therapist, considering progress and therapeutic objectives.

I had the honor of working with Lindsey at a previous job and she is one of the sweetest individuals I have ever met. Lindsey listens intently to everyone and is open to people from all walks of life. Lindsey is knowledgeable and passionate about advocating for mental health. This makes Lindsey a great leader and counselor. I would refer anyone I know to Lindsey!

I’ve known Tammy Wagstaff for quite some time. She was very helpful to me for finding my strengths and improving my working and personal relationships. She is a good listener and is able to “see” my point of view . I would highly recommend this counselor

*****I have been a patient of Sandra's for nearly 2 years now and I really can't say enough good things about her work with me. She is a true Christian counselor and that was exactly the perspective I needed to guide me down the path God was trying to lead me. She definitely strengthened my faith and made many of life's big problems seem like small speed bumps when looking at the big picture!! I highly recommend Sandra Q. if you are looking for the someone who honestly cares about you and the journey you are on. Remember, there’s ultimately only one way to peace in your life, and that’s to walk daily with the Prince of Peace, Christ Jesus!! *****

The doctor (PhD) I saw for therapy decided, on the second session, to pay more attention to doing things on his phone than to listening to me. He thought he was hiding what he was doing behind his portfolio, but he was not. I could see the reflection of what he was doing, and he was looking down more than up. He was pretending to listen but didn't do a very good job of that, because when I stopped talking, he would incorrectly try to restate what I said or, make a comment on what I said which turned out to not be relevant because it was clear he wasn't listening. He did not seem to want to be there. It was a horrible experience. I called the next day to complain to the lady on the phone, and got a sincere "I'm sorry" and that's it. When I got the bill (very expensive, by the way), I have been attempting to call the office to pay it over the phone but I keep getting told that the people that do the billing are currently busy and that I should call back. It should not be that difficult for someone to take a credit card number and apply it to my bill, especially a bill I shouldn't have to pay due to horrible service. I hope the other therapists at Thriveworks are better than the one I selected, and actually have interest in helping their patients.
