Starting Addiction counseling

What is Addiction counseling?

Addiction counseling therapists at Thriveworks in Bethlehem, PA can help people manage their urges to use the substance or engage in the activity they're addicted to. In addition, it can help people manage the challenges that stem from their addiction from relationship issues to problems at work as well as those that their addiction may stem from like trauma.

How does Addiction counseling work?

Addiction counseling at Thriveworks in Bethlehem, PA works by helping one understand the underlying causes of their addiction, teaching them coping strategies, and recognizing their specific triggers. Long-term or ongoing addiction counseling can also help to prevent relapse.

Is Addiction counseling conducted in person or online?

Addiction counseling at Thriveworks is conducted both in person and online by video. We encourage you to choose the option that works best for you.

How long does Addiction counseling last?

The length of addiction counseling depends on the individual's needs as well as the extent and severity of their addiction as well as the problems that might stem from it. That said, people can make meaningful progress in addiction counseling in the first weeks to months.

Need more help deciding?

People often need counseling or therapy to overcome their addiction because they can’t stop using even if or when they want to. They can’t control their urge to drink, gamble, shop, use. Because they know what it feels like when they fulfill that craving. They long for that fulfillment, as well as the comfort and satisfaction the substance or behavior brings them.

There are different types of addiction, of which we touched on above: you can become addicted to alcohol and other substances, and you can become addicted to activities like gambling, shopping, and eating. Whatever the case, it’s important you seek the help you need to control your addiction and live a healthy, successful life. That’s our mission at Thriveworks—to lead you on your mission to living better. If you need addiction counseling, reach out to Thriveworks Bethlehem, as we’re able and eager to help.

What Are Common Signs of Addiction?

There are different signs of addiction: there are physical, emotional, and behavioral changes that can signify an addiction. Let’s break those down:

  • Physical Signs: These include weight loss, hyperactivity, malnourishment, paleness, and unpleasant body odor.
  • Emotional Signs: These include irritability, denial, blame, and loss of interest in day to day activities as well as those once beloved by the individual
  • Behavioral Signs: These include isolation, lying to loved ones, financial strain, and difficulty at school or work.

If these signs sound all too familiar then you might be struggling with an addiction. And as you can see, addiction can cause some serious damage to the afflicted individual as well as his or her loved ones—which is exactly why it’s so important to seek treatment. If you’re concerned about your habits and think you might have a problem, consider working with a counselor or psychologist at Thriveworks Bethlehem.

Do I Need Addiction Counseling?

As we just discussed, the signs are there. However, it isn’t always easy for one to realize they have a problem. And if they do realize they have a problem, they might be hesitant to admit it or talk about it. In addition to the signifiers listed above, these individuals also often…

  • Plan to change their habits, but haven’t yet succeeded
  • Have failed to follow through on their responsibilities
  • Suffer significantly in their personal and/or professional lives

The good news is that a counselor can help. Counseling has proven to effectively treat addiction. And while each counseling journey is different, depending on the client and their specific circumstances, this process often involves learning how to manage their addiction in everyday life, as well as forming healthier habits that will help them sustain a happier, healthier, and more successful life.

Kenneth Fulton has been my psychologist for over a year and a half. He has brought meaning back to my life, after losing my mother in February 2020 and dealing with covid. I can never put into words what his counseling has done for me. I went from a very dark place back into the light again. He's the greatest at what he does. I could go on and on about this counselor but that would take too long. Thank you Ken for everything you've done.

Through my sessions with Lora I’ve been able to stop doubting myself and my capabilities. My life has changed drastically for the better through her teachings and spot-on feedback. I started seeing Lora because I was going through a tough breakup and not only were we able to acknowledge the toxicity of that relationship, we were also able to tackle my productivity issues at work and I have since completely turned my career around. I feel as though I’ve been running with a ton of weight on my shoulders and Lora was able to guide me on how to liberate myself from all of these burdens and run freely! Thank you Lora, don’t know where I’d be without ya!

I worked with Christiana for nearly four years in a clinical setting. In our agency, she was known as a compassionate counselor and was very sought-after by clients because of her caring nature and ability to hold clients accountable when needed. Her solid clinical skills made her a colleague I could always count on for solid feedback and a very thorough way of addressing client needs. She was able to look at clinical issues from multiple perspectives and with a real sense of fairness and respect for the client. Christiana is a rare find in this field!
